Supporting the Growth of Women’s Football in the Highlands

As part of our continued commitment to promoting women’s football, we recently spoke with Iain MacIver, Manager of Ross County FC Women’s team, and Laura MacIver, the Team Captain, to explore the rich history of women’s football at the club and the exciting future ahead for the squad this season.
This is a pivotal moment for women’s football in the Highlands, with Ross County Women entering the pyramid system for the first time. Following a successful league-winning campaign in the Highland & Islands League, the team is now aiming for promotion to the national leagues at the first attempt. With a talented and dedicated squad, we are proud to be sponsoring them and supporting their journey toward greater success.
What began as a small team of just 10 players with a vision has now blossomed into a thriving club. Today, RCFC Women is home to 215 players, ranging from U8s to senior football, and the youth academy continues to produce top-tier talent.
Iain MacIver, Manager of RCFC Women, said,
With the support of the club and our sponsors Pat Munro, which is crucial for the club’s growth and development, we are confident that the current rapid progress will continue. We are incredibly grateful for the support we receive from our sponsors.
Laura MacIver, Team Captain went on to say:
For a large number of the squad, the Highlands & Islands League was their first taste of Women’s football, so to win the league at the first attempt was an incredible achievement and a testament to the talent coming through. The level of commitment shown by the girls to train and play is second to none, and with the mix of youth and experience we have in the team, I believe we are in a great place to progress.
The club’s youth teams have consistently excelled, with the U18 side recently being named “Youth Team of the Year” at the 2024 Scottish Women’s Football Awards. RCFC Women’s reach has also expanded, with players coming from across the Highlands, including Orkney, the Western Isles, Gairloch, Skye, Fort William, and numerous other towns and villages.
With the first team now competing in the pyramid leagues, and with continued support from sponsors, the infrastructure is in place to further develop the team and drive their continued success. This was demonstrated during a recent Scottish Cup match at the Global Energy Stadium, where an impressive 650 supporters attended, showcasing the growing local support for women’s football.
Brian Munro, MD at Pat Munro (Alness) Ltd said:
We are excited to be part of RCFC Women’s journey and proud to support the promotion of gender equality in sport. Through our sponsorship, we are reaffirming our commitment to create opportunities for young people across the Highlands helping them to reach their full potential in football and beyond.
